Treatment

Treatment will vary and is tailored specifically for each individual. This is important as no one’s body or history is exactly the same.  My treatment approach is generally quite physical and you will often feel the areas being worked on. It is quite usual to ache a little the next day as the body is adjusting to the treatment. I may also at times choose to use a more gentle approach such as functional unwinding techniques if i feel this is more appropriate or this is your preferred choiceSoft tissue massage, muscle energy release, visceral or manipulative techniques are some of the techniques I use. These can all be applied to help restore alignment and function to the spine and joints of the limbs as well as releasing muscle tension , reducing pain, improving your bodies mobility and function as a whole.

People often ask if they will “be clicked”. Some people are happy with this technique but many people are nervous at first. I will always ask for your consent before proceeding with a manipulation and there are lots of other techniques I can use if manipulation is not for you.

How many treatments?

It can vary how many treatments each person needs depending on their underlying issues and history. In general you should expect 4-5 treatments with a view to spreading further treatments out over time if necessary. I do my best to fit this in with your schedule and together we discuss an approach that works for you. Once your initial complaint has improved , many people like to return every few weeks or months for maintenance treatments. This is often an enjoyable approach helping to keep your body functioning at its optimum rather than coming in when it’s broken!

CONSULTATIONS

Your initial consultation begins with a case history. You will need to allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for this appointment. Through detailed questions I will find out what your current issue is as well as your background history. Though some of the questioning may not seen relevant to you, this step is important for me to establish the likely cause of the issue , what might be maintaining it and to rule out any other possible medical cause. There is often a lot to take in during your first appointment. For this reason I will email after your appointment to give a brief explanation of what we discuss during your session. I may also give home-care and links to exercise videos that I think may be helpful. This also gives you an opportunity to ask any further questions as well as give feedback on your response to the treatment.

Examinations

In a typical examination you may be asked to remove some outer layers of clothing so I can see your spine / limbs more clearly. You may like to bring a vest top or shorts to change in to if you would be more comfortable. If you are not comfortable with this I will of course work with clothes on. It is important you feel safe and relaxed at all times during your treatment.

I will look at the way you stand , your breathing pattern and your over all posture. I’m aware that it’s not easy to stand while someone is doing this so while observation is very important,  I will make my notes as quickly as I can. You will then be asked to perform some simple movements so I can see if there is any restriction or pain. I may also test your muscle strength , sensation and reflexes.

If I have any concerns with any of your symptoms I will refer as necessary.
